Solar Industry Donates Solar Arrays and Installation Services to Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity Homes
Yesterday morning, representatives of several solar companies with a Texas presence – including SolarCity, Trina Solar, Solar US, SES 21, SolarTek, Schletter, and Bosch Solar Energy – joined Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) officials in celebrating the donation of residential solar arrays being installed on 15 new Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity homes.
”We are so thankful to the Solar Energy Industries Association and its members for the generous donation of PV arrays and installation services that provide, clean, reliable, low-cost power for our homes,” said Bill Hall, CEO, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. “This standard of building reduces utility costs for our homeowners and strengthens the long-term stability of the home, while improving the overall impact on the environment.”
”The solar industry is dedicated to helping neighborhoods in need. The industry is making solar more affordable for consumers, while bringing new jobs to communities across America,” said Rhone Resch, President and CEO of SEIA.
Twenty-five thousand solar professionals are convening at the Dallas Convention Center this week for Solar Power International 2011 – an annual conference being held in Texas for the first time since its inception in 2004. The U.S. solar industry is growing 69% annually and currently employs over 100,000 people throughout the United States – double the number of solar industry jobs from two years ago.
”We’re honored to work with Habitat for Humanity to donate solar installations that help reduce energy costs for those in need,” said Eric Wittenberg, SolarCity’s regional director in Texas. “Texas solar projects create jobs for Texans, produce renewable electricity, and reduce pollution. The state of Texas has virtually unlimited potential as a solar power producer.” SolarCity serves the greater Dallas-Ft. Worth area from a 12,000 square foot operations center in Northwest Dallas.
”Trina Solar is pleased to work with Habitat for Humanity to help local families power their homes with solar electricity while cutting their energy bills,” said Robert Muhn, Trina Solar’s vice president, sales and marketing. “Our company is committed to investing in local communities and to providing high-performing solar modules that are built and assembled in an environmentally responsible manner. Partnerships like these help Trina Solar to make these commitments a reality.” Trina Solar is a leading global solar manufacturer operating across the U.S.
SolarCity and Trina Solar donated and installed 2.9kW rooftop solar arrays for two of the Habitat homes. Solar US is donating solar water heating equipment to these two homes as well. Texas-based companies SES 21, Bosch, SolarTek, and Schletter will begin installing solar arrays on the remaining 13 Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity homes next month.

Lucid Energy Inc., a renewable energy technology company and pioneer in the development of in-pipe hydropower systems for large water users, today announced that the company has signed an agreement with the Portland Development Commission (PDC) and the City of Portland, Oregon to partner on the development of a hydropower system within the city.
The partners plan to collaborate with the Portland Water Bureau on a project that will use Lucid Energy’s patented LucidPipe™ Power System, a unique, in-pipe turbine that captures energy from fast-moving water inside of gravity-fed water pipelines to produce clean, reliable, low-cost electricity. The partners also will identify innovative applications for the technology, such as providing power to eco-districts, car charging stations, desalination plants, purification systems and off-grid water agency tasks.
”We are very motivated to find ways to reduce the costs of delivering water to our customers,” said David Shaff, Portland Water Bureau administrator. “We are looking forward to working with Lucid Energy to achieve this important objective.”
In a statement issued by the PDC and the City of Portland, Mayor Sam Adams said, “This agreement with Lucid Energy is an opportunity for us to extend Portland’s position as a living laboratory for green innovation and advanced manufacturing – and commercialize new technologies in our marketplace that will lead to more jobs, more investment, and more exports of locally-developed systems.”
The agreement also calls for collaboration on a first-ever in-conduit hydropower symposium in Portland, with the prospect of drawing the participation of both local and international leaders in energy and water technology.
“We are excited to have Portland as a partner to support our mission of being a global leader in the race to deliver smart water and energy solutions around the world,” said Gregg Semler, president and CEO of Lucid Energy Inc. “Portland has a very rich ecosystem of leaders dedicated to smart energy and water infrastructure.”
Lucid Energy’s in-pipe hydropower systems are targeted at large water users such as municipal water and wastewater systems, agriculture irrigation districts and water-intensive industries such as pulp and paper plants, chemical processing, data centers, semi-conductor fabs, aluminum manufacturing and thermo-electric power plants. Because of LucidPipe’s unique lift-based, vertical axis spherical turbine, which spins as water passes it, LucidPipe can operate across a wide range of flow conditions, volumes and velocities without any significant reduction in pressure.
Surf Expo is undoubtedly the industry’s biggest weekend of the year. In 2011, Malibu Boats dug deep with intentions to make a big impact. With the launch of two new models, the Wakesetter 22 MXZ and Response TXi, all eyes were on the boats and the team was psyched to show them off.
The trade show kicked off with a bang on Thursday morning, with our booth featuring a sparkling metallic, dark blue/white MXZ and a metallic Charcoal/Reuben Axis A22. Besides talk of the perfect wakes, plush amenities and the spacious bow on the MXZ, anticipation was creeping for the 8th Annual Wake Awards that evening. Malibu went big, securing an 80-person VIP list and coming on board as a title sponsor.
Excitement set in early, during the WSIA Industry awards, where Malibu won “Best Ad Campaign.” Ad creative and photography was a big focus this year, and it was an honor to take home this coveted award. Special thanks to Larry Meddock of the WSIA and our incredible photographer, Tom King. Also, congrats to Chessie Marine for their hard work resulting in the “Break Out Dealer Of The Year” award as well as Tommy’s Slalom shop for winning top honors as “Retailer Of The Year.” “Best Promotion” went to Active Watersports, which made a clean sweep for all three retailer awards going to Malibu dealers!
Friday’s action was shared between the trade show and Malibu’s on-water demo day in Windermere, just minutes from Surf Expo. Team rider Brian Grubb brought his all-black 23 LSV, which is still one of the most appealing boats on the water today. Over 20 dealers showed up from places all over the world like Argentina and Poland to get a first glimpse of the new MXZ and TXi. Eddie Trogdon, an active INT League member was on hand and we also saw appearances from owners like David Henderson and his son Hunter, (8), who just took first place in the Junior Boys division at the WWA World Championships.
The Response TXi already made its mark at the Malibu Open in August, but here, the dealers got a chance to take it for a spin, including Mark Watts from Liquid Sports in Orlando as well as Tommy Phillips from Tommy’s Slalom Shop in Denver, Colorado. Tommy was impressed with his continuing tests of the Response TXi. “The TXi handles like a dream, has no wake at 15 and 22 off and very little fluff,” Tommy said. “All the skiers at our ski school think it’s their favorite boat of all time and I would agree. The drivers seat feels secure and you have command of the boat. There is no glare off the dash like other boats and the simplicity of the operating system is a big plus.”
With deep roots in wakeboarding, going back to literally day one, Tommy knows what his customers are looking for in boat design and he likes how the MXZ accommodates everyone. “The MXZ has great wakes for all levels,” Tommy said. “Very rampy, clean and smooth! The bow space is maximized and we had four people comfortable up front and they could see all the action as Chad Sharpe put on a show. Deep storage allowed us to have ten people comfortably on board with lots of gear stowed. The auto pull up feature will turn new boat owners into pros at driving their family and friends.”
The Auto Pull-Up feature Tommy speaks of is another unprecedented innovation from Malibu and Indmar, and implemented into the line by Danny Gasper, Malibu’s Director of Product Design. It allows a rider or skier to record the rate of acceleration they prefer, and the driver just punches the throttle and you will get the same start every time.
The MXZ’s Hi-Flow ballast pumps were also a hit. The hoses were enlarged to 1-1/8″ with an 1100 GPH pump, which allows an increase in filling speed from 40-50 percent. The riders on hand were impressed with the wake without having to add any additional ballast. Phillip Soven actually got to take this gem home with him.
Dealers came into Saturday’s trade show amping on the new boats, and it was a great plus to be able to have them share the on-water experience with others. Lani Farmer also attended the WSIA meeting on Sunday morning, where the board of directors discussed and voted on multiple issues affecting our waterways and industry.
Overall, the Malibu staff and dealers considered Surf Expo weekend a home run. The factory is busy churning out new orders and the sales team are getting geared up for boat show season. Look for new videos from demo day in a matter of days.

Discover Sharon Kleyne Hour – Power of Water on Apple iTunes: A Talk Show that Could Save a Child’s Life
The recent launch of the Apple iPhone 4S gives consumers an opportunity to listen and learn from the Sharon Kleyne Hour – Power of Water talk radio show on Apple iTunes. Each week, Mrs. Kleyne interviews researchers and advocates from around the world on topics such as global water wars, water and climate change; water, diet and nutrition; water and health, and the influence of water on Earth and the Solar System.
Sharon Kleyne, Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Water Research and international water advocate, is announcing an increased emphasis on e-commerce and retail Internet accounts for Nature’s Tears EyeMist, the company’s patented, all-natural breakthrough product for dry eye, eye allergies and computer vision syndrome.
The Sharon Kleyne Hour – Power of Water has been syndicated on Apple iTunes since 2008. The show originates on Voice America’s World Talk Radio and Green Talk Network (Search: “Sharon Kleyne Hour”). Podcasts may be downloaded from Apple iTunes to any Apple iPhone, SmartPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac computer or MSWindows computer.
Debuting in March, 2007, the Sharon Kleyne Hour – Power of Water was created by producer-host Sharon Kleyne, global water advocate and American woman Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research. Mrs. Kleyne’s research led her to conclude that there is a global health crisis in dehydration diseases caused by dry and polluted air, fresh water shortages and poor sanitation. Dehydration diseases can include dry eye, dry skin, malaria, diarrhea, melanoma and much more.
By publicizing this water crisis and educating the public, Mrs. Kleyne and her 420 past guests believe that lives can be saved. Sharon has the research background to discuss the global water crisis with leading scientists, politicians and activists worldwide. The show provides the only place where guests can discuss life-or-death concerns to a worldwide audience.
“Women have been carrying water to their villages for thousands of years,” says Mrs. Kleyne, “and yet 5,000 children die each day from water related diseases. Even in the United States, our once abundant fresh, clean water is nearly exhausted, the air is becoming dryer, and dry eye is the #1 complaint of eye doctor patients.”
Sharon Kleyne is facilitating a new, non-political health culture that will enable people to thrive and be healthy on our changing planet.
